Tips for a balcony garden
November 5, 2025 · Iris Journal

Even if you live in a block of flats and don't have the garden you've always dreamed of, the balcony can be used as a miniature flower garden.

- Plan in advance how you want to arrange your balcony. Think about where you will place the pots and what types of plants you will choose.
- Go for the varieties of flowers that relate to the amount of light received by your balcony.
- Think about how you will water the flowers and where the excess water will drain, so that you don't have problems later with possible floods in the balcony.
- You can also choose a small tree for your mini-garden. It can add volume, but it must not be very heavy, in order not to violate the rules and safety measures of the block.
- Add support plants to the vegetable garden or use the walls for climbing plants.
- If you have a larger space on the balcony, you can think about decorations to increase privacy. Plants with many leaves, which create volume, are the most suitable in this sense.
- Add accessories that can contribute to the atmosphere of a real garden, especially if you want to place outdoor furniture on the balcony. Pebbles, parasols, lighting items or other figurines are just a few ideas you can choose from.
