February gardening jobs
November 4, 2025 · Iris Journal

I have made a list for February of seasonal works for the garden. Although at first glance it seems like a quiet month, February is full of activities for the garden. It can be said that February is a month of intense activity in the garden, orchard and around the house, if you are lucky enough to have a piece of land. Most of these seasonal garden jobs can be done in February if the weather is good, if there is no snow and if the ground has thawed. However, there are also typical February things that can and should be done regardless of the weather.
If February is frosty, if there is a lot of snow or heavy snow, the works are postponed until March.
- Clean the dry leaves of the ornamental grasses and cut them at a height of a few cm above the soil.
- Prune winter-blooming shrubs such as mahonia or viburnum.
- Remove and replant bulbs, plants or trees if you want to move them, provided the ground is not frozen or flooded.

- Prepare the plot where you will plant the vegetables, add compost and cover the plot with plastic wrap to retain moisture and heat.
- Build beds slightly raised above ground level. They are ideal for plants that do not tolerate excess water.
- Pruning can be done for apples and pears while they are still dormant. Pruning works for plums, cherries and peaches will be carried out in the summer because if carried out at this time the trees become sensitive to diseases specific to the season.
- Clear the currant and gooseberry bushes to get a rich harvest.
- Currant bushes can be planted between now and spring.
- Clean, repair and loosen the soil in planters, pots and boxes with perennials or those in which you will sow new plants.
- Buy seeds and onion sets. Buy and plant trees.
- Cut and clean the hedge.
- Feed the birds so they can take care of your garden in the spring and summer.
- Fix eaves and buy or repair rain barrels.
