Photinia PA

Photinia PA (Grafted tree) is an ornamental plant highly valued for decorative foliage, deep red color of new growth and for elegant shape on the torso.

 General description

Photinia is an evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub, led in the form of tree with crown (grafted on the stem). In the spring, the young leaves appear in a spectacular shade of bright red, which later turns glossy green.

 Dimensions

• Overall height: 2.0 – 3.0 m (depending on trunk height and trims)

• Crown diameter: 1.2 – 2.0 m

• Growth medium – fast

 Foliage and flowers

• Leaves shiny, oval

• Color: deep red on new growth → dark green

• White flowers, small, grouped in inflorescences (April–May)

• The flowers are sometimes followed by small red fruits

 Exposure and soil

• Full sun - partial shade (the red color is more intense in the sun)

• Prefer soil:

  • fertile

  • well drained

  • slightly acid - neutral

• Avoid heavy soils with stagnant water

 Watering and maintenance

• Regular watering in the first years

• After stabilization, it is moderately resistant to drought

• It requires regular haircuts for:

  • keeping the crown compact

  • stimulating red leaves

• Resistant to moderate frost

• In harsh winters it is recommended:

  • sheltered positions

  • protecting the grafting area

 Pruning

• It can be trimmed by 2–3 times a year

• Pruning stimulates the appearance of red leaves
